Letter from Messrs. Butterfield & Swire

regarding events at Hoi-how.

We append for the Government's information extract

of a letter dated 6th instant, and received to-day, from our

Shipping Agent in Hoihow in regard to the political situation

at that port:-

"On Christmas Day the Labour Unions and Student

"bodies held an anti-Pritish procession here, and

"likewise had an anti-Christian parade at the Mission

"here, but nothing unruly happened.

"Likewise on New Year's Day they had another anti- "British procession through the town, also a torch light

"procession at night, against all Foreigners in China;

"they as well demonstrated against the Customs, but

"nothing happened to anybody with the exception of a

"row amongst the different factions of Guilds."
